Boets Nel grew up on Die Krans wine farm in Calitzdorp. He completed a B.Sc (Agric) in Oenology & Viticulture cum laude at University of Stellenbosch in 1980 and rejoined Die Krans after completing military service in 1982. He is the winemaker and co-owner (with brother Stroebel) since 1982.

Boets started the Cape Wine Academy courses in 1994, and completed his Cape wine Master studies in 1997.

His research project was “Die toekoms van Suid Afrikaanse Port” (The future of South African port).

Boets has won numerous awards with Die Krans’ wines over the years, including Veritas Double Gold medals, the Peter Schulz Port Challenge and SAA Wine selections.

Boets was the secretary of the SA Port Producers Association from 1993 – 2001 and is still a committee member. He is a regular panel member at the Veritas awards, the SA Young Wine Show.
